Choose Your Pathway– Students can join in any year. Ideally, a student should be building up an excellent profile and we start working with them in Year 10/Grade 9.

Glossary of Useful Terms
ACT (American College Testing)
An American standardised test to assess high school students’ academic achievement and college readiness.
A Levels
A two year, university-entrance, exam-based qualification from the UK curriculum. Usually 3 or 4 subjects are taken, with specific subjects often required for different university courses.
AS Levels
Equivalent to half an A level and completed with an exam in the first year of the 2 year A level programme.
AP (Advanced Placement)
AP is a College Board programme offering undergraduate university-level examinations to USA and Canadian high school students
Clearing-UCAS
UK system to give a second chance to students who do not meet their conditional offers on results day. Clearing matches students with places at universities that have yet to be filled.
College/University
These terms are used interchangeably. University is the preferred term in the UK, College or University can both be used in the USA. e.g. Harvard College/Yale University. A university is generally larger with both undergraduate and graduate studies and research opportunities. A college is usually smaller in size and focuses more on undergraduate education. They can be public or private institutions.
CommonApp
Or Common Application, is an undergraduate college admission application platform covering over 1000 colleges and universities all over the world, but mainly the USA
Community College
A USA, 2 year programme that can give entry to University in the USA- a 2+2 route to a college degree. Often suitable for those without a High School Diploma
Conditional Offer
An offer made by UK universities with requirements for acceptance based on final exam results.
Co-op
Term used in North America to describe programmes offered by some universities with paid work experience slotted into the degree- usually for two semesters.
Firm Choice -UCAS
In the UK, this is the first choice university, assuming the student meets the conditions for entry on results day. Firm and Insurance choices are made by late May.
Foundation Year
offered by several UK universities as a pathway for entry to certain degree courses upon completion of this preparatory year.
Gap Year
A year between school and university when prospective college students might travel, work, study or do a combination.
High School Diploma
Graduation certificate to signal completion of 4 years of High School and 13 years of school education.
IB Diploma
A two year 16-18, rigorous, college preparatory international programme- widely recognised as the best curriculum for success at university level
IB Learner Profile
Ten qualities of an internationally minded person that the IBO curriculum aims to inculcate in its students
IELTS
Measure of English language ability used by Universities and other institutions to set minimum entry standards for accessing degree courses
IGCSEs
International General Certificate of Secondary education, is an English language based secondary qualification based on exams of a 2-year syllabus, typically taken at 16 years old. It is equivalent to the GCSEs.
Insurance Choice-UCAS
In the UK, this is the second choice university if a student does not meet the conditions for entry of your Firm following results day. Firm and Insurance choices are made by late May.
SATs- Scholastic Aptitude Test
A standardised pre-admissions test widely used for college admissions in the USA- owned by non-profit organisation College Board.
High School Transcript
A certified record of a student throughout a four-year course of study including all enrollment history and all courses studied.
UCAS
The ‘Universities and Colleges Admissions Service’ provides educational support services in operating the application process for British universities and colleges. Students can apply to up to five different universities and/or subject choices with some exceptions.
UCAT
The University Clinical Aptitude Test is a pre-admissions test used for the selection process for medical students in the UK
Unconditional Offer-UCAS
An acceptance made by UK university without any further requirements needed- not very commonly offered- or post results, e.g. after a Gap year.
Year in Industry
Term used by UK universities to describe a course that involves one year in a paid work environment. Increasingly popular.
Year Abroad
– Term used by UK universities to describe a course that involves one year at an overseas partner university. Many courses have all three options.
